Who we are

Erasmus was founded as Erasmus Antiquariaat en Boekhandel by Dr. Abraham Horodisch in Amsterdam in 1934. Together with Horst Garnman, he quickly developed the antiquarian bookshop into a preeminent name in the international book trade, specializing in the area of art and art history. Since 1984, Erasmus has focused more on being a library supplier, providing university, research and specialist libraries with a comprehensive service. In 1990, its subsidiary, Librairie Erasmus was founded in Paris in order to guarantee an efficient delivery of French publications.

Between 2013 and 2020 the company was part of the Connect Books (2013-2018) and the Aurelius Group (2018-2020), together with Houtschild Internationale Boekhandel. Since 2020, Erasmus Antiquariaat en Boekhandel is independent again and managed by the partnership of Dirk Raes and Casalini Libri, continuing to combine tradition and innovation for the benefit of the international library community it serves. On 1st June 2023 Houtschild Internationale Boekhandel was integrated into Erasmus Antiquariaat en Boekhandel . The combined company continues to operate under the name Erasmus Antiquariaat en Boekhandel BV, with headquarters in Amsterdam.

The union of the two companies brings together their long-established expertise in academic book supply. A team of qualified staff provide an efficient and personal customer service. Our services

Erasmus is an important partner with more than 3000 libraries worldwide, supporting them in the selection, acquisition and processing of books, periodicals and standing orders, both digital and printed. Our global network makes it possible to deliver all publications of interest to your library, from scientific works to general literature, from commercial publications to publications from associations, foundations and individuals. Even if the book is no longer in print, our antiquarian search service is available to perform searches.

For your e-books you can visit our e-book platform Torrossa. There you will find more than 400,000 titles from 470 publishers in many languages.

You can entrust us with the management of your subscriptions and series, magazines and databases. With many decades of experience we can guarantee that there are no gaps in your subscriptions.

In addition, our New Title Service and Approval Plans enable us to take a lot of work off your hands when building your collection. Our subject specialists will keep you informed of all newly published and forthcoming books in your field. Via the approval plans, we can ensure that you have a relevant collection in your field within your budget.

Online platform

Our customers have access to an extensive catalog of 52 million titles. For nearly each title, we provide complete bibliographic descriptions (including classification, details of contents and MARC record). The MARC records from the database provides the main order details as well as information concerning the main bibliographic fields.

Our online platform enables you to not only place orders, but also track and trace them. Collaborate with colleagues on multiple Shopping carts and Wish lists. It also provides insight into your order history, standing orders, New title service and Approval plans.

Approval plans

In close cooperation with the library, an approval profile is created, on the basis of which Erasmus makes a selection of titles. The selected books are sent to the library "on approval" and may be returned in case the title does not fit the collection. When selecting books, standing orders and subscriptions are taken into account in order to avoid duplication.

Approval shipments are invoiced and sent separately from other orders. If desired, we can supply the corresponding MARC-records of each shipment. Furthermore, we offer a shelf-ready service. The combination of the above services guarantees excellent workflow support for the library.

New title service

Erasmus provides its customers with a New Title Service (NTS). Important new titles are announced and sent to the client according to their individual profile which has been established beforehand. This New Title Service is sent per e-mail and includes direct links to our website where the client may view their NTS selection at all times.

Standing orders

Orders for numbered or unnumbered series (Standing Orders or Continuation Orders), loose-leaf publications and works in parts are handled by our experienced team in the Standing Order Department. New volumes, parts, issues or instalments are delivered as soon as they are published. Our many years of experience guarantee a reliable and comprehensive customer service for this particular field of the library service.

Order management

Orders can be placed electronically via EDI (Edifact, XML), through our website (password- and user name-protected) or by e-mail, fax, post and telephone. If you wish, an order acknowledgement will be sent by e-mail. You can track the status of your order online at any time.

Orders received are checked and, if necessary, bibliographic details will be amended. Orders are processed and sent to the publisher on a daily basis by EDI, e-mail or fax. An automatic reminder is sent to the publisher if, after a reasonable period, the order has not been received. The library receives a message when the order cannot be supplied immediately (not yet published, reprinting,...).

We also inform the library when a book is "out of print" and propose an antiquarian search. If successful, we advise you of the price and only after your confirmation, will we proceed with the order.

E-books

E-books can be found in our database, ordered online and the titles will be supplied through our partner Torrossa. Torrossa provides every library with an individual solution : title-by-title, short term loan or demand-driven acquisition is possible. Invoices for the acquired titles are sent from Torrossa to Erasmus and Erasmus will invoice the client.

Invoicing

Erasmus provides customer-oriented invoices following your requirements. Our invoices are clear and mention both the original publisher's prices and exchange rates used by the European Central Bank. Invoices, delivery notes, monthly invoices or pro forma invoices can be established, broken down by budget, fund or department.

Logistics

Erasmus uses a consolidation service in the United States, the United Kingdom and Germany. Publications from those countries are delivered to Erasmus three times a week. Books are carefully packed with environmentally friendly packing material and delivered without delay by an efficient parcel service. Each parcel contains the relevant invoice. A tracking system allows us to follow a parcel until delivery and shows us who signed for receipt. Urgent orders can also be dispatched using a courier service.
